Description

{1} Seventy trial trenches were excavated over an area of 247ha. Forty-five trenches were dug in the southern part of the site in Field 1, which revealed evidence of a Roman rural settlement dating to the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD comprising probable ditched enclosures and field boundaries. A stone-lined corn drying oven was also found. Possible late Iron Age activity lay to the east of the Roman settlement and may have bee associated with a trackway identified by geophysical survey. Of three possible pit alignments identified by geophysical survey only one was identified during the evaluation. Several post-medieval quarries, isolated, undated ditches and remains of medieval/post-medieval ridge and furrow were also identified. [not all trenches digitised- lack of control points on illutrations]
