ENN108921 - Land off Harley Way, 2012 (Excavation)

Site code: BHW12. Between September and November 2012 Northamptonshire Archaeology (now MOLA Northampton) was commissioned by CgMs Consulting to undertake a programme of archaeological excavation on land off Harley Road, Benefield, Northamptonshire. An area of Roman activity was located to the east of the site (Area A). This comprised three large enclosures constructed in two phases, as well as numerous quarry and waste pits, postholes, a trackway and a limestone surface. One certain and three proposed corn dryers were located in one enclosure. The Roman activity is dated 1st-2nd century AD, with some later 4th-century activity. Area B comprised two medieval sub-rectangular plots, later followed by the construction of at least four limestone buildings, each of at least two rooms. Associated pits and ditches were also identified. The site is dated from the early 13th to mid-14th century. Information from OASIS Online Form.
