Description

Archived under ENN107879. {1} Excavation on land within the Monksmoor Farm housing development recorded a Bronze Age boundary ditch, a late Iron Age settlement and a series of Romano-British field boundary ditches dating to the 1 st-2nd century AD. The Iron Age settlement comprised seven roundhouses with associated enclosures, pits and postholes and a separate, large rectangular enclosure with an internal roundhouse. Pottery, animal bone, burnt stone and slag were recovered from many of the features. {2} Two separate phases of excavation were undertaken: to the north were Areas 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 which were excavated between December 2014 and March 2015. The development area was formerly arable farmland with the recently demolished Monksmoor Farm at its centre. The northern area was on a slight south-eastern slope. The underlying geology comprises glaciofluvial or alluvium deposits.
