Description

{1} Limited evidence for the Outer Bailey wall and bank was observed. {2} Following the open area excavation on the footprint of the new station in 2013, the final stage of fieldwork comprised an intermittent watching brief during the removal of the floor slab of the previous railway station, lying to the north-west of the excavated area but still within the outer bailey of the former royal castle. This area was much disturbed by basements along the western side of the former station and also by two sunken rail lines, which had been backfilled with brick rubble from the Victorian station prior to the construction of the 1960s station.
