Description

The archaeological observation, investigation and recording exercise involved monitoring the excavation for a service trench running from the Sexton’s hut to a sewer connection in the road. Additional trenches were excavated to divert rain and waste water from the church into this new service along with a shallower trench to bring an electricity supply from the church to the Sexton’s hut. It revealed a simple stratigraphy of topsoil overlying the burial horizon which in turn sealed the natural (only observed in limited areas). Charnel material was recovered from the burial horizon which was collected for reburial. The only feature identified within the monitored area was a brick burial vault of 19th century origin.
