Description

A level 3, 1:2500 scale photogrammetric survey was carried out by RCHME Air Photography Unit in the vicinity of the Neolithic causewayed enclosure at Briar Hill, Northants, SP73625923. The survey was undertaken in June 1995 as part of the Industry and Enclosure in the Neolithic Project which was set up by the Cambridge field office of RCHME. The main objective of the survey was to produce an accurate 1:2500 scale plan of all plough-levelled archaeological features in the vicinity of the enclosure. The project area was confined to three fields to the west of Briar Hill Farm (now destroyed by a housing developement). The area is bounded to the north by the railway line and to the south by the Rothersthorpe Road, a total area of approximately 50 hectares centered on SP737592.The metrical accuracey for the finished plot was +/- 2 metres, this was achieved using the Aerial software published by the University of Bradford. Field control was obtained from OS 1:2500, 1:10560 and 1:10000 scale plans as well as being derived from carry-over control, in the form of archaeological and agricultural features seen on previously digitised photographs. An accompanying report detailing photographs used, site location, topography and history and a full description of features plotted was produced as well as an interim inked plan. As a result of this survey, the following NMR Monument records were updated; SP75NW 39, 41, 43 and 48.
