Description

The archaeological works were undertaken by JB Archaeology Ltd on behalf of the Churches Conservation Trust as part of the installation of a new drainage ditch along the eastern wall of the Black Lion Inn within the graveyard of St Peter’s Church, a Grade I listed building within a scheduled monument. The purpose was to ensure appropriate treatment and recording of any archaeological remains likely to be affected by the groundworks. The excavation revealed nine inhumations, including four infants and five adult males, all aligneeast-west. A further 839 disarticulated bone fragments were recovered, representing a minimum of nineteen individuals. Evidence indicated significant past disturbance of the graveyard and the presence of two charnel pits. A late 19th‑century brick-and-stone feature was also fully excavated. Overall, the investigation confirmed substantial past disturbance and provided additional evidence for burial activity and later refuse disposal within the churchyard.
