ENN111149 - The Sun Inn, 2014 (Building recording)

An historic building survey was undertaken by the University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) of the former Sun Inn, Main Street, Marston Trussell, Northamptonshire, in advance of partial demolition and residential redevelopment of the site. The short range of 1 and a half storeys, located at the western end of the building and proposed for demolition, appears to be the earliest structure on the site, originally part of a longer building of c.1700. In the early part of the 19th century, the eastern part of this building was demolished and replaced with a larger structure, of two stories in height, which extended back towards the north to form an L-shaped building. This arrangement is first recorded on the Enclosure Map of 1815 and appears unchanged on the Ordnance Survey map of 1900. In 1849, the pub was called The Swan and early trade directories record the change of name to the Sun Inn by 1861. From 1849-1861, the victualler is listed as Martha Harrald and in 1874, the victualler was Xenophon Harrald. Towards the end of the 20th century, the Inn was subject to substantial internal remodelling involving the removal of internal walls and the erection of a large extension to the rear. The historic pub buildings appear to have completely stripped out at this time and very few early fixtures or fittings survive internally. The report and archive will be retained by ULAS under the Accession Number NH_SunInnMT_2014, until it can be deposited with Northamptonshire Council.
