Description

The site lies within an Iron Age landscape situated to the south and east of Hartwell. A settlement lies 350m to the south-west of the site at School Lane which was occupied until the end of the 1st century AD and enclosures lie in Salcey Forest to the east and south-east. The site lies beyond the medieval hamlets of Hartwell and formed part of Salcey Forest. Cartographic evidence suggests that the site was assarted at the end of the medieval period and the name ‘Assarts’ remained in place until the 20th century. The remains of RAF 72 Maintenance Squadron lie close to the north-east and a military plane may have crashed in Hartwell during World War II.
