Description

Three archaeological trenches were dug on land to the west of Green street. Originally, the excavation comprised of a single trench but this one revealed a probable defensive wall, a clay bank and a succession of intercutting ditches ranging in date from at least the medieval period through to the 17th century. Given the significance of this result, the county branch requested two more trenches to be opened, resulting in the clay bank continuing into trench 2 whilst trench 3 halted due to encountering the northern wall of the building.
