Abstract/Summary

Three archaeological trenches were dug on land to the west of Green Street, Northampton (NGR: SP 748603) across the supposed line of the former town defences. Related features include a possibly clay bank or rampart, apparently of medieval or earlier date, which at one point is surmounted by a stone wall, 1.85m wide. The upper levels of a ditch or ditches lying to the west contained medieval pottery. Two seemingly contemporary ditches were cut at a later date and were probably filled no earlier than the seventeenth century, suggesting that they could date to the English Civil War.
