Description

Archaeological excavation was undertaken by MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) on Norwood Farm, Northampton, Northamptonshire in February 2022 consisting of two areas, D and E which formed part of a larger development area. Mechanical excavation was used to open the areas, GPS was then used to survey any archaeological features. The features were investigated by hand excavation to the required percentages as stated in the WSI. There was evidence of early Prehistoric activity in both areas through residual flint and a polished stone Axe. The features comprised large rectangular enclosures with divisions. The activity of forming and maintaining the enclosures ranged from the middle Iron Age to early Roman, with the epicentre of activity in the Late Iron Age. Area D contained one large rectangular enclosure and three smaller C-shaped enclosures, two ring ditches, two dividing ditches and a watering hole. Area E contained a similar style of rectangular enclosure with eight ditches potentially forming further enclosures as well as two burials and a cremation. Area E and D had medieval activity visible through furrow systems and post-medieval activity in Area E with structure foundations.
