Full Description
{1} Two areas of archaeological interest were found through excavations by MOLA. The excavations found evidence for early Prehistoric activity in both areas through residual flint and a polished stone axe. Both areas of interest identified a series of Late Iron Age enclosures that may have remained in use until the early Roman period. At least two phases of late Iron Age activity were present on site and they were related to the creation and recutting of enclosures. First phase of Late Iron Age activity was characterized by a circular enclosure, an oval enclosure and two ditches. The second phase of Late Iron Age activity comprised a circular enclosure, a post hole group, watering hole, three divisional ditches. These were all likely agricultural animal enclosures or storage facilities. A small quantity of early Roman pottery was recovered which may suggest they remained as extant features in that period, though activity appears to be minimal. Early Medieval activty was present only in the form of two inhumations. Post-medieval remains consisted of ridge and furrow cultivation and the remains of a post-medieval red brick building.
