Description

A programme of archaeological observation, investigation, recording, analysis and publication was carried out during the groundworks phase for the construction of a double garage and workshop at 16 Roundtown, Aynho. The investigation revealed evidence for post-medieval activity within the site, primarily in the form of a significant quantity of finds, the majority dated to the early 20th century, including glass bottles, pottery and animal bone, indicating the area was likely used for waste disposal. Three areas of post-medieval surface were also observed, a sandstone surface made up of regular stone setts, possibly a stable floor or part of a yard, and a possible stone path leading up to it, and another, earlier, stone surface or path. There is no evidence for structures in the field on early Ordnance Survey maps, suggesting they pre-date this mapping.
