ENN112738 - Land off Stowe Road, Preston Capes, 2025 (Excavation)

An archaeological strip, map and sample was undertaken on land adjacent to Stowe Road, Preston Capes, Northamptonshire ahead of the construction of two wildlife lakes.The only archaeological feature identified was a rubble layer in the southwestern portion of the smaller dew pond, related to the buried remains of a barn depicted on 19th century mapping and its associated yard. The only finds recovered were two sherds of late medieval pottery and a clay tobacco pipe stem from the topsoil. The shallow depth of the topsoil and absence of any subsoil may indicate that the area has been near-continually in pasture even in the medieval period.
