Abstract/Summary

An archaeological strip, map and sample was undertaken on land adjacent to Stowe Road, Preston Capes, Northamptonshire ahead of the construction of two wildlife lakes, on behalf of Mr Graham Stanton. The only archaeological feature identified was a rubble layer in the southwestern portion of the smaller dew pond, related to the buried remains of a barn depicted on 19th century mapping and its associated yard. The only finds recovered were two sherds of late medieval pottery and a clay tobacco pipe stem from the topsoil. The shallow depth of the topsoil and absence of any subsoil may indicate that the area has been near-continually in pasture even in the medieval period. The deer park boundary depicted in the foregoing geophysical survey was not evident cutting the natural substrate.
