Description

{1} Trial trenching undertaken on the south bank of the Nene opposite the area of the late Saxon town and west of the medieval bridge. Two parallel lines of overlapping, staggered trenches, 1m wide and up to 2.5m deep, were cut by machine for a distance of c250m east-west across the site. No evidence of a causeway or road surface was found, although there were a number of north-south aligned ditches. Pottery of the 12th-13th centuries was recovered from one of the ditches.
