Description

{1} An archaeological evaluation of land between St Georges Street and Grafton Street showed that the entire area had been heavily quarried for ironstone from the medieval period onwards. Development during the 19th century led to the introduction of up to 3.3m of soil in the southern half of the site, presumably to level the area prior to construction. No evidence of the Civil War defences was present. If the quarry pits were 18th-19th century in date then this activity would have destroyed any trace of the defensive circuit. Alternatively, if many of the quarry pits have a medieval origin this would suggest that the defences lie elsewhere.
