Full Description

{1}Geotechnical test pits revealed extensive quarrying with up to 4m of natural ironstone removed; undated but possibly medieval or post medieval in date; underlying archaeological deposits may have been destroyed.

{2, 3} Evaluation showed that entire area had been heavily quarried for ironstone from medieval period onwards. The quarries were difficult to date due to the inclusion of residual material, but some appeared to have been backfilled in the 13th/14th centuries. A single medieval pit and stone-lined posthole/socket was identified in a small island of undisturbed ground.
