Description
{2} A watching brief during the construction of a car park on the site of Northampton Castle. It had been assumed that all traces of the castle in this area had been quarried away but in constructing an exit road from the car park onto St Andrews' Road. It located the inner bailey ditch still surviving to a width of 16 m. A series of late Saxon deposits was also present. {5} Archive notes indicate that a larger area was opened up and two sections exposed. The outer barbican ditch was exposed in the larger area to the north and an earlier Saxon ditch was interpreted as the Saxon defesive line. The inner bailey ditch was identified in the southern exposed section [B] and Saxon deposits in the northern [A].
