ENN13208 - Northampton Castle, 1961-4 (Excavation)

{1} Series of excavations undertaken during the years 1961-64 by Alexander in the area of the castle. An individual interim report for each year is present. Areas excavated include Chalk Lane, Castle Hill (Castle Street), Scarlettwell Street/Bath Street, St Peter's Rectory Garden and Fort Street. [Data from NRHE record: No published report has yet appeared for this site. A draft report was produced by Dr Alexander and a summary of the evidence was subsequently included in a review by A Chapman of the Northampton Shire County Archaeological Unit (1985-86). However, no publication ensued from either of these texts. Copies of these manuscripts exist at English Heritage (Registry) and Northamptonshire SMR (number 7460007). Annotated versions can also be found on the microfilm record at the NMRC. Northampton Museum finds accession no.: 1994.213] {7} This reports provides the first published accounts of the 1960s excavations.
