Description

At Burystead, a large area of former paddocks and waste ground was available for excavation between 1985 and 1987 prior to and during the early stages of new housing development. It measured 106m north-south by 110m east-west, and a total area of 0.75ha was excavated. The southern boundary lay directly adjacent to the churchyard of St Peter's Church. The northern half was excavated in 1985-6, the southern half in 1987. A separate area, lying on the Midland Road frontage to the north was linked to the larger excavation area by a series of trial trenches excavated prior to the main excavations.
