Full Description
{1} Saxon and medieval village of Raunds. Village divided into "Ends" - North End, Middle End, Nether End, Thorpe End, Higham End, Hill End. Three manors have been identifed at Furnells, Burystead and Gages, possiblity of further manor at Nether End.Evidence of early-middle Saxon settlement at north Raunds and Thorpe End - uncertain whether there was continuity of settlement into late Saxon/medieval period or whether they simply shared a similar location.Large scale re-planning and enlargement of settlement in late Saxon period and again in medieval period. Early medieval buildings only noted at centre of village and around Thorpe End. Medieval expansion concentrated around "Ends" with possible settlement shift away from centre. Abandonment of manor at Furnells and re-location of Burystead manor in late medieval period due to economic and demographic changes.Large houses built to the south of the village in fifteenth and sixteenth centuries may mark rise of locally important families. Expansion of village in Victorian and early 20th century period due to increased prosperity derived from shoe industry.
{2} Excavations at The Square off High Street, Raunds were unexpectedly devoid of features suggesting that the settlement was smaller than previously thought.
{4} Detailed analysis of the Saxon and Medieval pottery recovered during the Raunds Area Project at Furnells.
{16} During the late Saxon period the layout of Runads village appears to have been formalised and extended so that the medieval plan was established, if not fully occupied, by the mid C10th.
{17} In c980 known as 'randan', in 1086 at Domesday known as 'Rande', later 'Raundes (Randes, Raunds), in 1442 as 'Rawns', in 1570 as 'Rawnes' and in 1712 'Rance'. Origin of the name 'at the borders or edges' presumably because it lay on the eastern edge of the county.
