Description

{1} Four trial trenches were opened and investigated on the site of the former Evening Telegraph printing works. Modern layers of brick and rubble were removed by machine to varying depths, onto natural surfaces of clay sand with ironstone fragments. No significant archaeological deposits were found, although walls relating to 18th/19th century buildings were recorded. These and later developments on the site probably involved widespread truncation and levelling, destroying any pre-existing archaeological remains.
