Full Description

{1, 2} Workhouse established in the 1718 by Kettering vestry. In 1721 it stood on the west side of the Hog Leys with a plot of ground, apparently its garden, extending in front of it onto the leys, an encroachment that possibly took place when the workhouse was established. Location shown on 1826 plan of town by Robert Smith (NRO Misc. photostst 1587/1). Large number of buildings located on Workhouse Lane now Dryland Street. A large number of buildings shown on Workhouse Square in 1926 - these have now all been demolished.

{4} A workhouse is known to have been built on the site in 1717, and this is clearly shown on 19th century maps, along with numerous factory buildings and yards. Trial trench excavation found two walls, one of which appeared to delineate a yard area immediately to the west of one of the workhouse buildings and another which was probably part of one of the buildings facing into the courtyard.
