Description

{1} Archaeological observation during the excavation of a drainage trench which covered a distance of 70m, located along existing paths. With the exception of the northern extent and four inspection chambers, the trench did not exceed 0.5m wide and 1.1m deep. A block of masonry exposed below the existing NE buttress of the north chancel chapel may be part of an earlier buttress. Across the churchyard, many burials were encountered, although the narrow trench precluded detailed observation or recording. A brick-lined burial vault, probably dating to the 18th-century or later, was also found. Stone-lined drains and the foundations of a further possible vault, as well as a possible medieval wall, were recorded. Pottery dating to the Roman, Saxon, medieval and post-medieval periods was recovered. Mapping is approx from description in source
