Description
{1} Trial trenches excavated in 1979-80 over c 130m between SP75746074 and SP 75866079 to test for early post-Conquest defences. No traces of defences were recorded. To the west there were postholes and other cut features of probable 12th century date, the remainder of the area was probably open or cultivated land. Five trial trenches were excavated. In October 1980 the contractors excavated a series of trial holes to test the nature of the soil deposits. Two of the trenches contained deposits of archaeological significance (trenches 6 and 7).
