Full Description

{1} First Boot and Shoe factory built by William Nichols in 1865 (or 1850?) in Grove Street. On the ground floor of the factory was a shop for groceries and clothing and employees were expected to spend most their wages there. Factory on upper floor. The original building and its early 20th century replacements have been demolished and the area is now occupied by RPC Containers.

N.B. There are two shoe factories shown close together on early maps either (or both) of which could be that of Nichols, therefore the location has ben fixed between the two.
