Wesleyan school
Established in 1855 in a building in Hill Street. The school was supported by subscriptions from interested people and a government grant, the school was partially staffed by pupil teachers. In 1879 the Wesleyans offered to shut down their school in return for the formation of a school board which could manage one school, the offer was refused. The running of the school was taken over by the county council in 1908. (1)
