Full Description

{1} Late 19th century factory to the rear of a plot off High Street - red brick construction with blue brick arches. Physically attached to a large stone building facing on to High Street. The building would appear to be a shoe factory (need to check Tracey's info) or possibly a clothing factory. The building is now out of use and being utilised as a builders yard. The structure would appear to have high potential for surviving in its original condition, but would appear to be vulnerable to demolition or rennovation.

{2} A brick-built two-storey factory with a tarpaulin for a roof. This was David James' clothing factory built around 1874, later used by Wallis and Linnell, clothing manufacturers based in Kettering, and latterly used by shoe wholesalers.

{3} This two-storey L-plan factory has a seven-bay north elevation, of brick with Welsh slate roofs and cast-iron framed windows. It was built before 1884 and extended before 1899, on map evidence, and since no wholesale boot and shoe manufactureers are thought to have been based in Burton Latimer at so early a date, it is probably the works of one of the three clothing manufacturers listed in the 1890 Kelly's Directory.

{4} Level II building recording survey of the complex ahead of redevelopment. The earliest phase appears to have been a single storey stone cottage, probably built in the 18th or early 19th century. This building was later incorporated into the factory, with subsequent phases built in brick and comprising the addition of a first floor as well as a number of apparently haphazard extensions. Map evidence suggests that most of the factory-related alterations appear to have happened in a short space of time.

Subsequent removal of all almost all fixtures and fittings permits no suggestion as to what might
have been made here. The only evidence of machinery is a single cast iron drive-shaft housing set in
the north wall of the ground floor room. Nothing remains of any machinery to which it supplied
drive to nor any evidence of the original power supply.
