Full Description
{1} A small agricultural village until the 19th century when in common with many other of the county's towns it saw the development of the clothing and foorwear industries and the population grew reapidly. Ironstone quarrying was also a key industry in the locality during the first part of the 20th century on the north and east sides of the town. When during the second half of the 20th century cheap foreign imports led to the closure of the shoe and clothing factories the twon was reliant on two large post-war companies - Weetabix and Alumasc - both still going strong. However, in the past 20 years, the construction of the A14 (M1-A1) link road, led to the development of a new industrial estate on the north side of the town and resulted in new industries being attracted.
