Full Description

{1} Boot and shoe works, Stamford Road
Office accommodation to the frontage with very basic architectural embellishment, but very plain. The rest comprises north lit sheds now in use by a number of business including 'County Footwear UK Ltd Quality Shoe Manufacturers' Building established 1892. Film 6, photo 21;

{2} The former Allen and Caswell shoe factory may have been first built in the late 1890s possibly for William Thomas Farey and Son. It was an L shaped factory workshop with a two storey office block fronting Stamford Road built of brick with limestone and sandstone dressings. The factory has remained in the shoe trade for much of its history although the occupants have changed on several occasions.
The former Allen and Caswell shoe factory is a combination of a two storey office building and single storey factory units occupying a central site between Stamford Road and Cornwall Road, Kettering. The historic core is L Shaped in plan with various later extensions to the sides and rear. Today the original single storey factory building is in two ownerships, to the west Blints Shoes, advertised as Universal Footwear, and to the east MGM Developments. The original building, constructed in the 1890s comprised a rectangular northlit factory area, now Universal Footwear, and seems to remain largely intact as storage and sales area. Although beyond the scope of this report the north lit roof retains its original offset A frame construction with tongue and groove panelling on the blind side of the roof. Photographs from Stamford Road show the rrof line and the central pediment of an office suite which may have been part of the 1890s factory.
