Full Description

{1} Established in 1842 - held in a building formerly used as a methodist chapel near the Market Place for 28 years. In the 1870's a new school was erected behind the Congregational Church. In 1903 the British School was taken over by the council under the ruling of the Education Act of 1870 and the school building was found inadequate in a report. A new building was erected in St James Street and the old building was utilised as a Sunday School. The original British School building has now been demolished, but the structure erected in 1870's is still in use, but now appears to be utilised by a religious group. Film 4 photo 20-21
