Full Description
{1} Brickworks, London Road. Brickworks shown on map of 1900 - now built over by new road and some houses.
This is the oldest of the several brickworks in the area and may have originally been operated as two separate concerns, there being yards on either side of the Little Addington Road on the 1884 map. At this time, the one on the west side had a small rectangular kiln, whilst that on the east side had at least one circular downdraught kiln and one larger rectangular kiln which could possibly be a small continuous. Only the latter is shown on the 1900 map. The directories show three brickmakers in 1849, James Berwick (who continued until at least 1866 as a brick and tile maker), W Berwick ( who was a brick and tile maker, builder, and gravestone cutter), and T Smith (who held The Railway Commercial Inn),. And was an agent to the Railway Company and a timber, coal and salt merchant ). At least between 1885 and 1900 the yard appears to have been run by George Thompson. It was desused by 1927.
