Full Description

{1} George Hotel, George Street
Has been demolished and replaced by modern buildings for The George. There is a small element which might be original. A 2 storey extension to the side. Film 1, photo 25.

The George, Sheep Street
Leeds to London coaches tended to stop at the George Inn.

{3} A level 2 building recording survey undertaken prior to redevelopment identified several phases of construction and alteration. The oldest fabric identified was a plaque found in the office behind the hotel reception dating to 1639. This was found and remounted above a possible relocated 17th-century fireplace in 1925, although no other observable 17th-century fabric was identified. A datestone on the central George Street range gives a construction date of 1766, with the ranges on the corner of George Street and Sheep Street and a further adjoining range on Sheep Street appear to have been constructed in the late 18th or the 19th century and further additions in the late 19th and 20th centuries.
