Full Description

{1} The National School was opened in 1844, but closed shortly after the Board School was set up c.1890. The School buildings on Church Street were then renovated in 1891 for use as the Sunday School. The building indicates that it is the 'Parish Church Sunday School' and there are two separate entrances for boys and girls marked 'Girls Parish Sunday School' and 'Boys Parish Sunday School'.

{3} The former St Lawrence’s Church School Rooms are a substantial Victorian brick building built on the eastern side of the church. The building has a utilitarian appearance, with small decorative details such as the classical hood moulds around the windows and the castellated tops of the two entrances. The carved wording showing the separate boys’ and girls’ entrances remains, as does the later 20th century timber signage indicating the building’s use.
