Full Description

{1} Brickmaking. Between 1860 and 1900 George Savage was making bricks at both Towcester and Stoke Bruerne. Towcester Brickyard may have been on Tiffield Road. The site closed in 1906. Location of brickworks probably at 'Brickyard Farm' on the Old Tiffield Road.

{2} Opened in 1854 by George Savage. Two bands of upper lias clays were worked, one giving a red-brown-blue brick, the other, lower down, giving a much richer blue. A horse-driven pug-mill was used and the tempered clay thrown into a 18"x9"x9" mould, then compressed by a steam driven press. This block was then wire cut into 12 bricks. Remains of two of the kilns survive and are of interest in that they share a common wall, thus each kiln had a row of ten fireholes on one side only. The yard closed in 1906.
