Abstract/Summary

Although brickmaking in the county dates from Roman times, and there are scattered references to brickworks in the modern sense from the 17th century, this survey has been concentrated on the period from the beginning of the 19th century, since a greater volume of definite evidence is available about this period, in the form of Ordnance Survey and other maps, and trade directories. The start of the period coincides with the beginning of a huge increase in the use of bricks and the opening of a large number of works in the county.
