Monument record 3980/15 - Gasworks (The Rothwell Gaslight, Coke & Coal Company Ltd)

The gas works was formed in 1857. Nothing visible remains.

{1} The gasworks for Rothwell was established by 1880's and is shown on all three early Ordnance Survey maps. The works appear to expand (or perhaps move slightly?) between 1880 and 1900. Kelly's Trade Directory of 1894 indicates 'Rothwell is lighted with gas by a company' (Rothwell Gaslight, Coke and Coal Company Limited). The gasworks were purchased by the Urban District Council in 1899 (by provisional order) at a cost of £13,000.The early development of gasworks in the town (1880's) has gone and the area built over by a new housing estate, the gas board retain a small parcel of land on the area of the late 19th century extension of the works, but there do not appear to be any surviving remains from the early period.
