Full Description

{1} New Sunday Schools for the Congregational Church on London Road and an institute were erected in St Peter's Avenue in 1909. The buildings are very large, red brick structures which no longer appear to be in use. Film 4, photo 6,7, 8.

{2} A level II historic building record was undertaken of the Sunday School prior to its demolition. The Sunday School, Institute and Caretaker’s House were opened on 28th April 1910 and paid for in the same year. The Sunday School was built with red bricks in English bond, stone double-chamfered mullion windows and a number of stone inscription plaques set into the outside wall. On the south side of the building there is one date stone and the only decipherable remains of the inscription itself are the words 'Congregational Church' and the date ‘1909’. This obviously refers to the construction of the Sunday School and Institute. There are four further date stones, these are situated on the eastern end of the Sunday School building under the large arch window. A number of finials can be found on the top of the building, the central finial was struck by lightening in the 1960s and was never replaced.
