Corn Exchange, Market Square
Erected in 1861 - building is of red and white brick. Interior comprises a large hall in which the corn market, musical entertainment and public meetings are held. Other rooms are occupied by Literary and Scientific Institute and have a library of books and periodicals. The building was to become the 'Picture Theatre' by 1926, but has subsequently been demolished in a re-modelling of the market square (1)

{2} Erected in 1861 by Messrs Bellamy and Hardy. Although it was partly basemented, its expansive and church-like superstructure with its lofty windows, balustrade and spire was a visual landmark. It was demolished in 1958. Pevsner called its tower 'jolly' and lamented the buildings which replaced it.
