Abstract/Summary
A desk-based assessment of two adjacent areas in central Wellingborough has shown that while the northern area was marginal, the southern area lies at the medieval core of the town which was devastated by fire in 1738. Historic maps and documents depict the subsequent 18th and 19th-century redevelopment and infilling. Modern redevelopment has destroyed many areas. However, one area from pebble Lane west across the Market Place, stands out as retaining a potential for the survival of medieval and possibly earlier remains, together with evidence of the first rebuilding after the 1738 fire.
