Summary

Fieldwalking surveys have recovered significant quantities of late Iron Age and Roman pottery in an area where cropmarks have been recorded.

Full Description

{1} Settlement (Significant find scatter). Large number of Roman sherds (and possible Belgic?) on dark area. Also many querns (for grinding charcoal rather than corn?) in area of 38m by 32m at SP 920832;

{2} Cropmark ditches of a possible field system with a small, rectangular enclosure. NCCAP:SP9283/027-8.

{3} Fieldwalking in 1978/9. Dark soil observed along with possible Belgic pot sherds, Roman pot sherds and quern fragments.SP 9208 8330;

{5} Fieldwalking survey between 1981-4. In Field 11 there was a general scatter of Roman pottery centred on SP 9195 8337; 120 sherds recovered; to the east, in Field 32, 666 sherds of Roman pottery were found in the north-western part of the field and a mixture of Iron Age and Roman pottery on the eastern site (110 sherds and 70 sherds respectively).
