David Hall was a chemist by trade but an avid archaeologist and historian in his free time until 1976 when he was employed as a full-time archaeologist, firstly as part of the Fenland Survey. He was raised in Wollaston and his early work was based around this area with excavations at Strixton and Raunds, as well as a number of other church, manorial and burial sites over the years. The discovery of a sixteenth-century open field strip map of Strixton led him to a life-long interest in documentary research. He undertook fieldwalking during the winter months and, during his lifetime, managed to walk much of the county. From 1972 this was done in partnership with Paul Martin. The oral reports largely relate to David's fieldwalking and are usually brief notes about sites. They should be read in conjunction with other elements of the David Hall archives. Many of the finds resulting from his fieldwalking are now held at the Northamptonshire Arc. The use of the term 'oral report' usually indicates that the HER holds no further information. The use of this type of source is generally discouraged now.
