Full Description
{1} Brickworks are shown on 2nd ed. OS map adjacent to ironworks in the north-east of the town. The area has since been built over.
{2} This brickworks built about 1870 by James Rixon and Co. lay in the north west corner by the Wellingborough to Finedon road bridge over the Midland Railway, south of the tramway which in 1874 ran from the mainline to Stantongate iron ore quarries. In the same year Rixon opened his own ironstone quarries at Finedon, and by 1886 had put his first blast furnace into blast on a site north west of the brickworks. Even by 1883 the brickworks was large, with a pit on the southern side, a rectangular continuous kiln and sidings from the main line. The works appear to have worked until at least 1927 presumably by the Wellingborough Iron Co. which took over from Rixon's in 1889 and by 1900 they had become extensive enough to require a tramway in the pit.
{3} "Brick Field" marked in 1880s, together with brick pit, railway sidings and various buildings, the latter including two kilns.
