Full Description
{1} A watching brief during the construction of the Stanion by-pass located an iron working site just north of the village. (An L-shaped length of stone wall and a quantity of 12th century pottery was also found in the vicinity.)
{2} Excavation was confined to a single day to time constraints. Along with the L-shaped length of wall, a further possible wall and wall were also observed. The two furnaces resembled Roman furnaces but there was no run slag in situ. They may have been roasting or smithing ovens but there was no tap slag in the vicinity.
