Full Description
{1} The village of Stanion was a major centre of pottery production throughout the medieval period from the C12th to the C16th. Together with the nearby village of Lyveden, it produced the whole range of medieval pottery from cooking pots, bowls and glazed jugs through to aquamaniles, roof tiles and finials, mainly in various oolitic limestone-tempered fabrics. The wares are found on many sites in the south-east midlands, and a few sherds have been found in association with Grimston (Norfolk) wares in the towns of Bergen and Trondheim in Norway. The industry appears to have been centred on the Corby Road and Little Lane area of Stanion, with many finds of kilns and wasters known from this part of the village. Only one kiln from Stanion has been formally published (Bellamy, 1983).
{2} An analysis of the records and location of finds from past discoveries associated with pottery production in the village. Hypothesis that pottery production was directly related to the Upper Hall manor
