Summary

A double row of postholes was found during gravel extraction. Pleistocene animal bones were also recovered from the pit. Cropmarks of a parallel linear ditch appear to be aligned on the postholes suggesting that they might represent a bridge.

Full Description

{1} Double row of posts 10ft apart, gaps between the posts 6 to 8ft. Posts 9in diameter, row extends over 25yds. Bases of posts preserved by wet conditions of ancient water course, 8ft below surface. No dating evidence.
Pleistocene animal bones also yielded by gravel pit.

{2} Fotheringhay (about TL 050927) Air photographs by Dr J K St. Joseph show parallel linear ditches running from the NW for nearly½ mile to a point on the Nene where a double row of posts was found, suggesting the existence of a bridge.
