Full Description

It may be expected that there were several inns at Higham in the later medieval period. The Swan and Hope Inn, with 60 acres of arable land and 10 acres of meadow, was granted in 1435 to the College by Chicheley. This must be the new inn ('hospicium') called 'le Swan' that lay in the Newland in 1441 adjacent to a burgage of the College. (1)
The excat location has not been identified although the 'Old Swan' public house is situated close to the southern boundary of the medieval town in Newlands. It is unlikely, however, that this is the location of the earlier Swan Inn as it is not identified on either of the eighteenth century maps.
