Full Description
The windmill is first recorded in 1291, when timber was cut in the wood and transported for the repair of the mill sails. Other repairs included the replacement of the windlass in 1300-1. The windmill was valued together with a watermill in 1300-1 and 1321-2. The mill is first separately recorded in 1488 when it was farmed at a rent of 26/8d and is said to have been newly erected. It was similarly described in 1514-15 and in 1518-19 yielded the same rent. In 1587 mill hill, a round mound lacking any superstructure, lay immediately south of the town. It seems likely that this was the site of the earlier windmill, which was removed from this original site soon before 1488 to the position it still occupied in 1728. (1) (2)
